Our story: The Phoenix Race

From inspiration to community impact

The Phoenix Race was born from a deep appreciation for events like the Barber Center's Beast on the Bay. When that beloved race concluded, a void was left in the Erie community. Our founder, driven by the desire to rekindle that spirit, created The Phoenix Race. We are a distinct 501c3 organization, dedicated to bringing back the excitement and camaraderie while focusing our efforts on supporting the vital small businesses, charities, and nonprofits that make Erie thrive.

Supporting Erie's heart and soul

The Phoenix Race is more than just an obstacle course; it's a platform for local growth. We spotlight small businesses by drawing attention to those located near our race route. Our event also features a vibrant festival with local vendors, delicious food trucks, and refreshing beverage trucks, providing direct economic support. For charities and nonprofits, our commitment is substantial: 75 cents of every dollar raised is donated directly to them, fostering a stronger, more resilient Erie.

Our values: For Erie, by Erie, because of Erie

At the core of The Phoenix Race are our guiding beliefs: "For Erie, By Erie, Because of Erie." This motto encapsulates our dedication to the community. We firmly believe that health, fitness, and camaraderie are essential pillars for Erie's prosperity. Our team is committed to organizing an event that not only challenges participants but also fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose, contributing to the overall well-being and vibrant spirit of our city.

Meet our team

Behind every service we provide is a dedicated team of professionals, each bringing their unique expertise and enthusiasm to our business.

Dave Hoffman

Founder/President

Dave Hoffman serves as the Founder and President of The Phoenix Race, bringing years of personal experience as a seasoned OCR athlete and a strong commitment to service through his work as a Caseworker for Erie County Drug and Alcohol. Inspired by the legacy of Erie’s original Beast on the Bay, Dave spearheaded a brand-new effort to keep obstacle racing alive locally—guided by the belief that through the ashes of the defeated beast rises the Phoenix. While The Phoenix Race operates as an entirely independent organization with no affiliation to the previous event, it stands as a direct homage to that spirit, dedicated to bringing high-impact, charity-driven racing back to the region
